Applications
Sulfuric acid is used in the manufacture of phosphate fertilizers, pigments, dyes, drugs, explosives, detergents, glues, wood preservatives and inorganic salts and acids, as well as in petroleum refining and mettalurgical processes. Sulfuric acid is also used in large quantities by the iron and steel making industry to remove oxidation, rust and scaling from rolled sheet and billets prior to sale to the automobile and major appliance industry. Sulfuric acid at high concentrations is frequently the major ingredient in domestic acidic drain cleaners. In one of its most familiar applications, sulfuric acid serves as the electrolyte in lead–acid storage batteries.
